Beer!

Now that I am feeling better, it is time to move on to Honduras. I’m certain I missed a lot in El Salvador, but I have a lots of places to go still before the boat to Columbia.

Shortly after I enter Honduras, I stop to check my map when this guy stops by to say hello:

If you look closely, that is a KLR250 front fender. I’m not certain what the bike started as (was it a KLR250?), but the motor is now a Chinese ripoff of a Japanese motor, the exhaust is custom, and the seat is being rebuilt by someone else.

Honduras is has some beautiful scenery:

All afternoon I see motorcycles traveling south towards El Salvador. What is surprising, is that these are all big bikes, 650cc and above. Dozens of them! I’ve not seen more than a handful of large bikes ridden by the locals since I left the USA! There is apparently a big rally they are all headed to. Lots of friendly and interesting people when I stop and talk to them. Though the drawback of doing so is I arrive at Copan after dark (oops!).

The Copan ruins have been recommended to me many times as being among the best of the Mayan ruins. I have to agree. In its own way, I enjoyed Copan as much as Palenque. Though the highlight was definitely the squirrels and birds, especially the rainbow-colored McCaws which would not cooperate in coming down for a good picture.

What makes Copan interesting is how ornate the place is and how well preserved the carvings, sometimes even with remnants of paint!

The stairway below was once covered in hundreds of runes listing the history of the city.

Archaeologists have dug tunnels into the structures to determine the history of how they were built. Two of the tunnels are open to the public so you can view the history for yourself, but they want a very large fee to do so which I declined.

Next up, the D&D Brewery. I’ve heard this is a great place to relax with good food and amazing beer! I notice I can take dirt roads most of the day, directly through more amazing scenery:

The D&D Brewery is everything that was promised. A good place to just sit back and relax for a few days before heading on to Nicaragua. The location is beautiful and relaxing. The beer is incredible. The travelers are interesting. Nick also drops by while I am there and when we head off, we travel together towards Nicaragua. Not all that surprising, we have the same time constraint of reaching our boat at the end of the month.

Lovely scenery!! Love the birds even though they are not cooperating in the photo shoot. I’m sure you will see many other beautiful birds over the next months / years. 🙂

I’ve heard that Honduras is definitely lovely. Glad it lived up to what I’ve heard.

Very glad you are feeling better!!
